Red River Floodway Expansion Project: West Dike Construction
PROTECTING THE CITY OF WINNIPEG FROM A MAJOR FLOOD EVENT
This monumental expansion project was designed to upgrade the existing floodway system after the 1997 flood. The project increased the floodway capacity to protect the City of Winnipeg from a 1-in-700-year flood.
The West Dike is 45km (28 miles) part of the floodway located south of Winnipeg; as part of the expansion work the dike was extended 11km (7 miles) and raised in some areas up to 1.5 m (5 ft). Chabot’s participation on the West Dike component of the work provided opportunities for growth, to enhance our flood protection expertise and establish industry partnerships allowing us to be at the forefront in innovative and effective flood protection and restoration work.
